A few days ago I interviewed Aleksandra Budnik. A fashion designer with a particular brand, called Vasya.
Almost by chance she entered the world of fashion. When she realized, she applied to a contest where they financed the completion of a wedding dress, and there, she invested her savings. Then, she obtained a grant from IED to embark on a journey of adventure that began in Belarus and had Barcelona for final destination.
Aleksandra started sewing early. She remember how in school they taught her to sew small pieces, such as a scarf for the head. Her whole life has gone to art school, where she learned to draw pictures with watercolors, pencil and also to use the batik tecnic. But at age 16 fate had prepared her another way.
“All my life I drew. Then there was a teacher who was the one who guided me in preparation for entering the university to study fashion designer. I think it was coincidence. My idea was to go to study industrial or advertising design and suddenly when we went to school this teacher tells me: `Let´s go to the fashion institute design, you are very good with your hands and this is really what you should do. ‘And that’s how I chose this way, ” says Aleksandra laughing.
What do you like design?
Wedding dresses. (N of the A: She says it safely and I love it). It’s the best out me and also what you like best. I like to see what happens on facebook and other social networks. Every time I work more and more time on this. I also have another line, which are the sustainable pieces. I consider it quite difficult to work with organic fabrics, but I try to do my part. It is good to try to recycle, mix new with vintage pieces.
Sometimes I go shopping and finally I don’t buy anything. I do not see the point. I know I will be dressed like the others, I’ll throw the stuff within two months and I will not enjoy it. At the end I have to go and look special designers, those with unique pieces, look at vintage stores or make something for me.
What do you want to transmit through the wedding dresses?
I like that throughout all the work (one month more or less, sometimes longer) you’re living a history with the bride. You’re not only making a dress. You’re making someone’s dream. The responsibility you have, the happiness that the brides transmits you about the weddings and their experiences are enriching. “I’ve been fantastic,” “Everybody would like my dress,” “They told me it was very original,” are some of the comments Aleksandra received from her clientes.
Every time is a different story and you live it in a different way, so it’s like a continuous trip. The personal factor is very important. If the bride trusts you, the dress goes super easy, but if not, you have mistakes.
Which fabrics do you use?
Silks, laces, but especially fabrics. I advise to use natural fabrics because most have the weddings in summer and want to be wonderful and comfortable. Especially that they can feel the fabrics without undisturbed.
What is the line of sustainable pieces?
Through this other line, I call Luxury recycle is a way to keep making pieces for my clients. Also it is a new opportunity to stay in touch with stores with emerging designers.
For this line I use high quality fabrics, such from Italy, Turkey or India. Basically I do tops and jerseys, depending on the season. I call it “luxurious” because they are unique pieces and behind each of them there is a lot of work. They are pieces of different fabrics, you have to mix the textures, colors, composition and put it all together with a different thread.
Each Vasya garment transmits the values in which the designer believes. Vasya reflects a wise, beautiful, successful woman in her personal and professional life. And undoubtedly also it reflects the passion with which Aleksandra talks about her work. Contagious.
It is wonderful to talk to professionals who transmit that passion for what they do. And that is why, so we must support those seeking a different, original way to not go dressed in series.
